Sutphen on-line My Brother, George Growing up with a little brother, two years younger that is, brings back wonderful childhood memories and I have to say they were all good. As a toddler, George was a little sweetheart, fair-haired with a perfectly even disposition and a pure look of innocence in those brown eyes. Around the age of four, even when mom found the dried-up chicken drumstick buried in the side of the couch, that innocent look remained. Then again when he pushed the metal knife into the wall socket and cried out with blackened fingers there was that look again. He was quiet and didnt talk much when very young but by the time he hit high school had a good sense of humor and a fun personality. In actuality, he was a big tease often horrifying me with some of his antics. He worked after school and summers at a downtown automotive store where his older co-workers and owners absolutely adored him and couldnt say enough about what a great guy he was. He was just such a good and caring young man and so very social that everyone around him loved him. George apparently saved enough money working there to surprise our mom with a stand-up freezer which was a luxury in the 50s. He and our dad would go fishing, or crabbing or clamming on the Jersey shore often bringing home tubs full of specimens. They would both be deeply sunburned and exhausted when they reached home after being up since the crack of dawn but felt the pleasure of it all. His love of fishing stayed with him forever. Later as an adult George and I stayed close. He went to college in Kansas and I went off to New York. We even married our present spouses within a year or so of each other. Then came the babies, and the busy times but we always stayed in touch no matter how far we lived from each other. He was so proud of his wife and his children. George was always full of energy and loved being outdoors. He loved gardening and working with the earth. He seemed to be able to take care of many gardens at once even for neighbors. He was truly unbelievable. He also so loved his job and was crushed when he had to retire because of health reasons. I think he loved mostly the camaraderie in the workplace. I will always think of George as one of the sweetest human beings I have ever known and do miss him dearly. Ruth Sutphen Foreman In Memory of George Posted 4/27/2010 Carole and family.
