Geraldine "Jerry" Ottinger, age 96 of Newaygo, passed away Friday, June 7, 2019 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Jerry was born on April 20, 1923 in Garfield Township to Jake and Genevieve (Aiken) Weiglein and graduated from Newaygo High School in 1940. Jerry has been a lifelong resident of the Newaygo Area where she spent most of her life living on the family farm in Garfield Township. She was a member of the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, enjoyed crafts, knitting, crocheting, quilting and reading books. Jerry had been an accountant at Kellogg's Company in Battle Creek and Mars Companies in Chicago and later began work at the Gerber Products Company until her retirement 1989 after 34 years of service. Jerry also taught adult education math classes in Newaygo and enjoyed her beagles. Jerry had been a volunteer at the Purcy Jones Army Hospital in Battle Creek where she would write letters for and play cards with wounded veterans following their return from World War II. She had also volunteered her time at the Newaygo County Commission on Aging preparing taxes for low income and senior citizens in Newaygo County; had been a volunteer caseworker and had been a volunteer with Hospice of Michigan. Jerry was fondly known to many as "the last of the red hot mama's" Jerry is survived by her children, John Ottinger of Newaygo; Barbara Ottinger of Newaygo; Philip (Patricia) Ottinger of Newaygo; 8 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild; her sister, Shirley Weiglein of San Antonio, Florida. She was preceded in death by her sister, Vennie Adighoffer. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL : Friday, June 14, 2019 11am at the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church 599 W Brooks Street Newaygo MI 49227.
