Gerrit Jim Scripps, age 94 of Hesperia, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, February 16, 2009. Jim was born on May 25, 1914 in Grand Rapids to Jerry and Jana (Witvoet) Scripps and met and later married Dorothy Myra Robinson on August 31, 1935 in Grand Rapids. Dorothy preceded him in death on March 9, 2006. Jim started work at his father-in-laws business Robinson Cartage, and owned and operated Robinson Cartage from Jan. 1, 1946 until his retirement May 25, 1984. Jim enjoyed traveling and being surrounded by his family. Jim was active in various organizations including the Airstream Association; member of the Lions Club for over 60 years, had been the Commander of the Singapore Yacht Club in Saugatuck and had been a Boy Scout. Jim was an avid bird hunter and horseback rider and enjoyed spending time in the woods on his property. Jim was also a member of the Hesperia Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Kay (Donald) Heaven of Hesperia; daughter-in-law, Nina Scripps of Franklin, NC; 9 grandchildren, David (Kerry) Scripps; Jill (Rick) Winchel; Jennie (Charlie) Carter; John (Kathy) Scripps; James (Jill) Scripps; Gail (Ted) Kidder; Jerry (Diane White) Heaven; Doug (Tricia) Heaven; Joy Heaven; 22 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; his brothers, John (Ricky) Scripps of Grand Rapids; Gordon Scripps of Muskegon; his sister, Peg (Bill) Potter of Muskegon; several nieces and nephews; his special caregivers, Sharon Love; Mary Boes; Kim Stevens; Kristen Tinkham. Jim was preceded in death by his son, James L. Scripps; his brother, Kenneth Scripps; and sister, Margaret Ruth Scripps. VISITATION : Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. FUNERAL MEMORIAL SERVICES : Thursday at 11am at the Hesperia Presbyterian Church. INTERMENT : East Hesperia Cemetery. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : Hesperia Public Library.
