Obituary

A very special sister and aunt left this world on Ascension Day to sing with the angels. Gertrude Smalligan passed away at Transitional Health Services late in the evening on Thursday, May 9, 2002. Gertrude was born on the family farm south of Fremont on February 23, 1911 to Nellie (Goeman) and Leonard Smalligan. Before moving to THS this past February, she had lived with her sister, Margaret in Fremont for 91 years. She was a faithful, lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church of Fremont where she had been a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Mary Martha Society. She had been an avid reader and enjoyed working in the yard. For 47 years, she worked in the Data Processing Department of the Gerber Products Company. She retired in 1976. Gertrude is survived by her sister, Margaret Smalligan of Fremont; two sisters-in-law, Esther Smalligan of Fremont and Lucille Smalligan of Wheaton, ILL plus many nieces, nephews and cousins. "Aunt Gert" will be sadly missed. She was preceded in death by her sister, Joan Deur and brothers Peter Smalligan, Nelson Smalligan, George Smalligan and Leon Smalligan. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 from the First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Eugene Los and Allen Petroelje presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
