IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gladys Peterson
Lucus
August 11, 1910 – April 15, 2006
Lucas, Gladys P. Gladys Peterson Lucas, of White Cloud, died on Saturday, April 15, 2006 in Fremont, MI. She was ninety-five years old. Gladys was born to Perry O. Peterson and Ella May Wiley Peterson on August 11, 1910 in Cutler, Carroll County, Indiana. The fourth of eight children, she was the eldest daughter of the family. Her siblings included a sister, Mary Josephine, and six brothers, Norman, Floyd, Thomas, Russell, William and Robert. Gladys married Cleo B. Jake Lucas on January 7, 1929 in Carroll Co. Their children, Boyce, and Waneta Jo, were born in Frankfort, where the family lived for sixteen years. In 1945, Jakes job brought them to Grand Rapids, where their son James was born. Gladys and Jake made their home there for forty years, first on Cherry Street, and then on Richmond Street. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January, 1989. After Jakes death, Gladys moved to White Cloud so that she could be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, Jo and Ken Phillips. She lived in her own home, next door to Jo and Ken, until 2005. Gladys will be remembered for many things. She dazzled us with the wonderful meals that she prepared: her beef noodles were the best around, and nobody could make a better strawberry-rhubarb pie. She charmed us with her hand-crafted gifts: her quilts, afghans and pillow-cases were treasures. She amazed us with her skill as a deer-hunter and fisherwoman --we didnt know many who were still hunting from a tree-stand in their seventies. She inspired us with her beautiful gardens: the fruits of her labor graced her tables year round, whether green beans, strawberries, or flowers. Gladys shared her skills with her daughter and granddaughters, teaching us to knit, embroider, quilt and crochet, cook and garden. Preceded in death by her husband, Jake, in 1989, her son Boyce, in 1995, and six of her seven siblings, Gladys is survived by her daughter, Waneta Jo, and son-in-law, Ken Phillips, of White Cloud; her son, James B. Lucas, of Hawaii; her daughter-in-law, Adelle Lucas of Whitehall, her brother, Robert (Betty) Peterson of Cutler, Indiana, and many nieces and nephews in Indiana. Gladys is survived by eight grandchildren: Michael (Linda) Idema of Comstock Park; David (Jan) Idema of Kentwood; Robert Idema of Baldwin; Debra Idema (George) Nowicki of Comstock Park; Pamela Lucas (Phil Ondersma) of Grand Rapids; Susan Lucas of Sydney, Australia; Karen Lucas (Jim) Steidler of Davis, CA; and Jeffrey (Belle) Lucas of Windsor, CO; twenty great-grandchildren: Eric Idema of East Lansing; Jennifer Idema of Comstock Park; Sara Idema and Lisa Idema of Kentwood; Molly (Hercules) Berzley of Grand Rapids; Jacob Idema and Patty Jo Idema of Lincoln; Joshua (Chihiro) Nowicki of Novi; Daniel Nowicki of Grand Rapids; Scott (Kyoko) Bullock of Honolulu, HI; Michael Bullock of Jackson; Trevor Bullock of Rogers City; Lucas Cornell, Travis Cornell and Taylor Cornell of Sydney; Meghan Steidler, Miranda Steidler, and Olivia Steidler of Davis; Elysia Lucas and Aaron Lucas of Windsor, and two great-great grandchildren, Tyler Berzley and Makala Berzley of Grand Rapids. Gladys Lucas was much-loved by her family and friends, and she will be greatly missed. Share a free confidential condolence to the Lucas Family on-line
