Gladys Ruth Hindes was truly one of a kind: a farm kid and family gal who was the life of the party and the stage, a ball of energy with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a friend to those who needed a friend.
Formerly of Fremont, Michigan and Palm Harbor, Florida, Gladys passed away on April 10, 2021 at age 101.
Grandma Glad, as she liked being called, loved her husband, Wayne Hindes, dearly and was dedicated to him for 66 years of marriage. She adored her children and grandchildren as well as her 11 great-grandchildren, delighting in visiting them and, in the past year, seeing them outside her window at Medilodge of Okemos.
She was born December 10, 1919 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was adopted at 3 days old by Blanche and Henry VandenBerg. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Fremont High School in 1937.
She was an active Mom, a dedicated Democrat, a Gray Lady at Gerber Memorial Hospital, a volunteer at Fremont United Methodist Church and had great friends in her sewing club and knitting clubs. She was a 'star' of the Fremont Little Theatre for many years, performing in productions of "Arsenic and Old Lace" and numerous others. She worked at Carajon Chemical Company for years and then received her real estate license. She excelled at this later life career. Wayne joined her and they were great partners in sales.
Grandma Glad loved to play golf, play bridge, swim and have dinner parties on their pontoon boat on Long (Ryerson) Lake. She danced at her 100th Birthday Party at Long Lake. She also loved her great-grandchildren, playing Ring Around the Rosie with them until late in her 90's! She has always enjoyed children, delighting at their antics and their laughter.
She is survived by her son, Van (Leslie) Hindes of Niwot, Colorado; daughter, Laska (Keith) Creagh of Williamston, Michigan; and daughter-in-law, Carol Hindes of Fremont, California; 7 loving grandchildren: Jed (Nikki) Hindes, Mariah (Zac) Bellinger, Reiley (Tom) Curran, Maggi (Mike) Forgue, Brittany Hindes, Becky (Jim) Larkin and Dan (Katie) Creagh. She also has 11 great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly whether in person or via Facetime: Hailey, Paul, Wayne, Henry, Lewis, Josh, Charlie, Van, Dan, Hadley and Eleanor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne in 2005, her daughter, Sandra Lynn Hindes in 1960 and her son, Hal Hindes in 2017.
