Obituary

Glenn H. Hymer, age 87 of Fremont, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, May 7, 2010. Glenn was born on May 8, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois to John Henry and Ethel Caroline (Shaffer) Hymer. Glenn joined the United States Navy where he served as a medic on the U.S.S. Haven which was the first naval hospital ship to go to Nagasaki following the dropping of the atomic bomb. After tour of duty, Glenn returned and became a rehabilitation counselor and teacher with the Olive View Hospital in Los Angeles for many years where he was instrumental in assisting people with reintegration to society following tuberculosis. Glenn moved to the Fremont in September 1994 from California and loved the nature and the outdoors. Glenn served on the crew of the Madeline sailing ship out of Traverse City for 10 years, served on the American Red Cross Disaster Team for 10 years and was an active member of the Newaygo County People for Peace organization. Glenn was also a member of the Fremont Friends Worship Group. Glenn is survived by his companion, Sharon Daly of Fremont; his daughters, Lorna (Garry) Spellman of Boerne, Texas; Ellen Hymer of Comfort, Texas; Julie Hymer (Adam Costa) of Monterey, California; his grandchildren, Nicole Spellman; Bill (Sarah) Spellman; Cailyn Costa; Parker Costa; his great granddaughter, Julia Grace Spellman; his brother, David (Suzanne) Hymer of Martinsville, Indiana. Glenn was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Beth Rydell in 1987; by his sister, Betty Hurst and by his brothers, Robert, Ralph, and Dean. MEMORIAL SERVICES : Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 2pm at Camp Newaygo. Glenn's contributions to the American Red Cross actually spanned over 25 plus years from California to Michigan. His commitment and dedication to the disaster program helped make the Red Cross' response efforts in Newaygo County into the strong program it is today. Glenn was a wonderful man whose contributions to both the Red Cross and Newaygo County will not be forgotten.
