Obituary

Gregory J. Siegel, age 67 of Fremont, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at his home. Greg was born on June 30, 1954 in Grand Rapids to Joseph F. and Irene (Ruczynski) Siegel. Greg graduated received his associates degree from Baker College. Greg joined the United States Navy where he served during the Vietnam War as a Hull Maintenance Technician and assisted with the evacuation of Americans from Beirut while stationed aboard the USS Charleston until his honorable discharge in 1973. Greg later met and married Sandy Swartz on November 16, 1991 in Grand Rapids and they moved to the Fremont area in 2000. Greg had worked as a Steel Fabricator and retired from Steel Supply and Engineering in Grand Rapids. He was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree. Greg was a storyteller and could talk to anyone. Greg truly enjoyed his family time and enjoyed following his son, Michael's sports teams throughout the years. He was well known in the family for his cooking abilities and hosting of holiday events and spending time with family at their cottage on Lake Leelanau. He enjoyed music and history and was well versed in both as well as was a avid Notre Dame sports and Detroit Tigers fan. Greg was a frequent volunteer at all the Gerber Memorial Hospital Fundraising events and often times traveled with his wife, Sandy to college fairs promoting Family Health Care. Greg had enjoyed fishing and golfing in his younger years and had enjoyed being Santa Claus at Family Health Care in White Cloud. He had been involved in the theatre and had an acting role in the first play at the Dogwood Center for Performing Arts, The Man of La Mancha as well as had been involved in Prevention of Child Abuse murder mystery dinner theatre productions. Greg is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sandy of Fremont; his son, Michael Siegel of Denver, Colorado; his sisters, Jorrene (Richard) Vaughn of Grand Rapids; Margaret Rundle of Grand Rapids; sisters-in-laws, E. Lynn (Grant) Goetsch of Lake Mills, Wisconsin; Martha Maloney of Traverse City; brother-in-law, Joseph (Nettie Sheesley) Swartz of Bailey; several nieces and nephews. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Irene Siegel; his brother, Lawrence Siegel; brother-in-law, Joseph Maloney; nephew, Bobby Maloney. VISITATION : Monday, February 21, 2022 from 4-6:45pm at Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel 7193 W 48th Street Fremont MI 49412. ROSARY SERVICES : Monday, February 21, 2022 at 6:45 at the funeral home. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL : Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at 11am at the All Saints Catholic Church 500 Iroquois Fremont MI 49412. MILITARY HONORS under the auspice of the United States Navy following the Memorial Mass Services at the church. Friends are encouraged to wear masks.
