Gwendolyn Marcella Walker, age 97 of Fremont, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at the Green Acres Assisted Living Center in Fremont. Gwendolyn was born on January 25, 1925 in Grant, Michigan to Dr. A.C. and Marcella (Bengtsson) Porter and has been a lifelong resident of the Fremont area where she graduated from Fremont High School in 1942. Gwen had been a secretary at Gerber Baby Foods and later worked as a Michigan Bell Telephone Operator in Fremont until her retirement. Gwen enjoyed music, dancing, 4H and scouting. She loved the out of doors which she found to be peaceful and spiritual. She was a former member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fremont. Gwendolyn met and later married Jack DeWayne Walker on March 14, 1946 at the Baptist parsonage with Rev. Frank C. Hawkins officiating in Blackstone, Virginia in a double ring ceremony before Jack deployed for overseas duty during World War II. He was the love of her life until he preceded her in death on September 26, 1990 after being in a comatose situation for over 8 years.
Gwendolyn's greatest achievement was going public with the "Right To Die" issue appearing on TV, at the State Capital in Lansing, Cover of Magazine Section of Detroit Free Press and many other newspapers in the United States in her support of "Living Wills" becoming law.
Gwen in survived by her children, Judy (Harry) Deur of Fremont; James (Tonja) Walker of Ada; her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jackson Walker of Ada; Michael (Casey) Gibson of Dade City, Florida and their children, Noelle, Noah, and Noriah; Daniel (Stephani) Gibson of Fremont and their children, Luke and Alli; Nichoel (Trent) Hansen of Fremont and their children, Emma Hansen and Ivy (Matt) Yager. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Walker; her three little angels, Jack DeWayne, Larry Elwin, and Teresa Louise Walker; her brothers, Wayland Porter of the U.S. Air Force; Merlyn Porter, veteran of World War II; Merlyn Porter and Wayland Porter and her son-in-law, Ted Gibson.
Private Graveside Services will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery where Gwen will be laid to rest next to her husband, Jack.
