Helen W. VanDuzen, age 76, of Fremont passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2002 , at home following a long illness. She was born on July 14, 1926 , in Ecorse, Michigan, to Louis F. and Medora (Newcomer) Hawkins and married Duane V. VanDuzen on August 6, 1949 , in Alma at the Alma College Chapel. She was a retired elementary school music teacher, teaching at the St. Johns Public Schools from 1948 until 1952 and then in the Fremont Public Schools System from 1964 until 1986. She sang in the Alma College Acapella Choir and graduated from Alma with a Bachelor of Music Education. Helen was a member of the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Fremont . Helen is survived by her Husband Duane V. VanDuzen of Fremont ; children Jane E. (Mark) Olgaard of Tawas City, Duane A. (Judy) VanDuzen of Marysville, Ohio , Cheryl A. VanDuzen of Ann Arbor, and David L. VanDuzen of Alden, Michigan; 6 grandchildren, Erica, Kristin, and Catherine Olgaard and Adam, Nicole, and Vanessa VanDuzen; sister-in-law Jane Hawkins of Trenton, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister and 2 brothers. Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Fremont with interment in Sherman Township Cemetery . For a more lasting memorial, the family asks that friends consider the Fremont Area Community Foundation for First Congregational Church United Church of Christ, Alma College , or Hospice of Newaygo County.
