Helena Starr, age 95 of Fremont, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2012 at the Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Campus in Fremont. Helena was born on April 2, 1916 in Worcester, Massachusetts to William and Monica (Winicovitz) Waslefsky. Helenas parents emigrated from Poland to Worcester, Massachusetts and at the age of 9, Helenas mother passed away. Helena and her father and siblings then moved to Hamtramck, Michigan and Helena grew up in the Detroit Metropolitan area. Helena had worked in the restaurant industry for several years until her retirement. Helena enjoyed playing cards with her friends and dancing - the polka, square, and ballroom, which she did well into her eighties. Helena also attended the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fremont. Helena is survived by her daughter and grandsons, Catherine (Alex) Kellerman of Fremont and sons, Chad Wirgau and Brett Wirgau; her daughter, Sandra (Richard) Schefke of Oxford and sons and families, James Schefke and his daughters, Shelby and Siara Schefke; Jeff (Kristina) Schefke and their daughter, Alyssa Schefke; her sister, Jean (Nick) Accola of Warren, Michigan. Helena was preceded in death by her sisters, Aggie, Mary, and Jenny and her brother, Johnny. Memorial services will be held at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fremont at a later time following anatomical donation to the University of Michigan Medical Center. Friends may consider the Redeemer Lutheran Church Building Fund for memorial contributions in memory of Helena. Arrangements by Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel.
