Obituary

Howard Allen Shafer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community member, went to be with Jesus on Friday, February 21, 2025, at his residence in White Cloud, Michigan. Born on May 10, 1940, in Hart, Michigan, Howard lived a full and dedicated life, marked by service, love, and commitment.

A graduate of Muskegon High School in 1958, Howard invested much of his career as a long-haul truck driver for Robinson-Cartage before retiring. His work ethic and dedication were reflected not only in his professional life but also in his involvement with the Teamster Union Local #406, where he maintained lifelong friendships and comradeship.

Howard met the love of his life, Barbara, to whom he was married for nearly 47 wonderful years. Together, they not only built a beautiful life but also their cherished "Half Acre Farm," where Howard found joy in farming during his retirement years. An active parishioner for 48 years, Howard was also a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Always willing to serve, Howard was an integral part of the White Cloud community, contributing his time and efforts tirelessly with the township for many years. His dedication and kindness have left a lasting impact on many.

Howard is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (Hodges) Shafer, of White Cloud, MI; his daughters, Kristi (Dean) Dorman, Teresa (Brian) Fountain; stepdaughters, Beverly Hadley, and Karen Nichols. He was adored by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. His family also includes his step-sister, Peggy Shackelford, and half-brother, Tim Shafer of Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his son, Scott M. Shafer, his parents, Howard Erwin Shafer and Stella (Carr) Shafer, special Uncle Harrold Shafer, step-brothers Glen "Buck" (JoAnn) Merriman, and Allan "Butch" (Betty) Merriman, and step-mother, Yvonne Burch.

The Shafer family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Rescue Garden for Animals, Inc, in Howard's memory.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during a visitation on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at St Joseph Catholic Church in White Cloud, MI. The Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in White Cloud, MI, officiated by Father Noah Thelen.

Howard's warmth, generosity, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Arrangements have been entrusted to Crandell Funeral Home in White Cloud.

May his soul rest in eternal peace and may the memories of his life continue to bring comfort to those he loved.
