Ivalene Mae Manahan, age 95 of Fremont, formerly of Big Rapids, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2008 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Ivalene was born on July 11, 1912, the daughter of Luther Charles and Mabel Lillian (Hurst) Riggs in Reed City, Michigan. She met and later married Maurice Joseph M.J. Manahan in 1934 in Big Rapids and he preceded her in death in 1969. Ivalene had been a resident of the Big Rapids area for 70 years before moving to Grand Rapids and then to Fremont to live with her daughter, Sally Rayman. Ivalene had been a homemaker and had worked part time at the Jack and Jill Childrens Clothing Store in Big Rapids and at the Theater in Big Rapids. She was a Life Member of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Daisy Chain of the Elks Lodge. Ivalene enjoyed collecting elephants, crocheting afghans and making Christmas ornaments for all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and with the wonderful care givers at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Ivalene is survived by her children, Sally Jo Rayman of Fremont; her son, Harlow Manahan of Annapolis, Maryland; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Joseph and her daughter, Patricia Louise Vandenberg of Lowell. Following her wishes, no funeral services are planned at this time, but it is asked for those who knew her to celebrate her long wonderful life in their own hearts. Interment will take place at the Highland View Cemetery in Big Rapids. Friends may consider the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont for memorial contributions in memory of Ivalene.
