Jack Sherman Bonham was born on Tuesday, May 14, 1935, in his maternal grandparent's home in Salem, Indiana. Jack loved to tell stories of his active childhood, especially about the one-room school house he attended. Jack's tenacious determination and excellent coaching enabled him to become a basketball star at Salem High School. After his graduation in 1953, Jack accepted a full-ride basketball scholarship to Virginia Tech University, where he majored in Business and earned a teaching certificate. After completing his student teaching in the fall of 1957, Jack moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and began teaching and coaching at Kellogsville Junior High School. He received his Masters from Michigan State University. He courted and eventually married Wanda Lou Ensing of Hesperia on August 27, 1960, in a double wedding ceremony at the Hesperia Presbyterian Church, with Wanda's twin brother Wayne, who married her good friend Barb. In the Fall of 1962, Jack and Wanda and their newborn son, Scott Paul, moved to Holland, Michigan, at which time Jack began a 30-year career as a Business Education teacher at West Ottawa High School, and was the Varsity Basketball Coach from 1962 to 1971. A beloved daughter, Cammie Sue, was born to Wanda and Jack in May of 1966. Jack worked in the summers to supplement his teaching and coaching jobs. Two of his longer-running jobs were as a State Park Ranger in Holland and Grand Haven, and on the Waldron Blueberry Farm in Holland, usually driving the picker or working as the shed boss. Following his retirement in 1991, Jack did assorted handyman jobs and performed much of the labor to transform a family cabin on the White River into a retirement home. Jack and Wanda supported their five grandchildren by going to many sporting games, scouting events, and plays.
Jack loved watersports and camping. One of the great joys of his life was taking his family to California and back in the summer of 1969, camping in a 12-foot trailer called "The Tumbleweed" and visiting the Badlands, Devil's Tower, Yellowstone, Crater Lake, Redwoods, Sequoia, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and Petrified Forest National Parks, fulfilling a childhood goal born of repeated View Master disk dreaming. In the summer of 1970, Jack took the family east through New England to Acadia, Maine, and then down to Washington, D.C. Jack and Wanda upgraded to a Sunnybrook RV in retirement and continued their camping travels far and near. In 1991, Jack, Wanda, Wayne, and Barb traveled to Europe on an Alpine Tour—seven countries in eighteen days, and returned home with an abundance of videos and stories. The extended family took a couple of trips together in 2003 and 2010.
Jack was a leader in the First Presbyterian Church of Holland for years; he served as an Elder, was often responsible for Buildings and Grounds, and was the unofficial camping and canoe trip coordinator. For twenty-five years, weekend canoe trips were held on the White River, with Jack and Wanda's cabin home as the luncheon stop. Jack was a great supporter of Christian Summer Camping as well, and spent much time and energy at Camp Greenwood in Gowen, Michigan. He was most recently a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Muskegon.
Jack is survived by his wife Wanda Lou Bonham, his son Scott Paul-Bonham (Donna), his daughter Cammie Sue Hussey (Steve), and grandchildren Andrea Joy Paul-Bonham, Nathanael Gage Paul-Bonham, Andrew Scott Hussey, Eric Cameron Hussey, Delaney Elise McGahan (Bennett). Jack is also survived by his younger brother Gene (Jan) Bonham and younger sister Sharon Stiles, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jack is preceded in death by his mother, Lorene Batt Bonham, his father, Paul S. Bonham, and his brother, Jerry Bonham.
