James A. Porky Armstrong, age 80 of Fremont, passed away Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at the Transitional Health Services in Fremont following a brief illness. Jim was born on December 18, 1933 in Lockport, Illinois to Benjamin and Mary Minnie (Kelly) Armstrong and married Dorothy Jean Tomac on September 24, 1960 in Joliet, Illinois. Dorothy preceded him in death on January 8, 2007. Jim moved to the Fremont area in 1971 from Joliet and had worked at Gerber Products Company in the label room for 20 years until his retirement on September 2, 1994. Jim had been a 30 year member of the Newaygo County Sheriffs Posse and enjoyed fishing, being in the Michigan outdoors and barrel racing horses. Jim joined the United States Army on January 7, 1955 until his honorable discharge on April 8, 1960 and then served in the United States Army Reserves until January 6, 1963. Jim is survived by his children, Dr. Joseph (Jacqueline) Armstrong of Littleton, Colorado; Mary Powles of Fremont; Stephen (Shirley) Armstrong of Morgan Hill, California; Teresa Armstrong of Littleton, Colorado; his grandchildren, Christina & Robert Armstrong; Elizabeth Armstrong; Daniel Lynch; Noah Armstrong, Amelia Jean Armstrong; his great grandchildren, Benjamin and Alexander; his brother, Harold Armstrong of Lockport, Illinois; his sister-in-law, Sarah Armstrong of Lockport, Illinois; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Mary; his wife, Dorothy; brothers, Leonard, Clifford and Charles Armstrong; sisters, Elizabeth Johnson, Margaret Pesavento; his in-laws, Joseph and Catherine Tomac; brothers-in-law, Marcus Pesavento; Robert Tomac and sister-in-laws, Evelyn Armstrong and June Armstrong. VISITATION : Saturday, November 29, 2014 from 5-7pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel with FUNERAL SERVICES at 7pm at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. VISITATION at Tezak Funeral Home in Joliet, Illinois on Monday from 9-10am with FUNERAL SERVICES at 10am at the Tezak Funeral Home. INTERMENT : St. Marys Nativity Cemetery in Joliet. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : Wounded Warrior Project.
