James Richard Barnes, Sr. (Jim), a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22nd, 2024, just days shy of his 87th birthday. Born on December 31st, 1937, in Fennville, Michigan, Jim lived a life full of love, dedication, and service.
A resident of Norton Shores, Jim spent over 35 years with General Telephone, working his way up from lineman to supervisor, a testament to his unwavering work ethic and steadfast belief in diligence and perseverance. His extraordinary ability to fix anything and everything around him was renowned among friends and family alike. Jim's life was a tapestry of interests and commitments. He was an active member of his church community, serving as trustee, usher, and treasurer over the years. His love for the great outdoors manifested in countless camping and fishing excursions and memorable bird and deer hunting trips. In his younger years, he indulged in every sport he could master during his high school and college days.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Alcie Eloise (Gibson) Barnes of Norton Shores, MI, and his beloved children: James Barnes, Jr. of Spring Lake, MI; Vicki (Paul) Schultz of Montague, MI; Julie (Randy) Wyhowski of Otsego, MI; Janice (Luke) Boomgaard of Spring Lake, MI; Pamela (Ken) Onken of Fennville, MI; Cheryl (Pete) Caperton of Fennville, MI; and Jody Klamer. He also leaves behind 14 cherished grandchildren and multiple great-grandchildren, all carrying forward his legacy of kindness, strength, and love. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Donald Barnes and Faith (Fosdick) Barnes, alongside two brothers and three sisters. His brother, Bill (Lucile) Barnes, survives him.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to all who knew and loved Jim. Donations in his memory can be made to Fountain View Assisted Living in Coopersville Michigan, a not for profit facility dedicated to caring for the elderly.
Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects at a visitation on Saturday, January 4th, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2651 Shettler Rd, Muskegon, MI. Later, a funeral service will be held at the same location at 11:00 am, with Rev. Joel Kluender officiating, celebrating the life and legacy of a remarkable man. Arrangements are provided by Crandell Funeral Home - Fremont.
Jim will be dearly missed and forever remembered for his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering strength. His life was a testament to love, family, and community, and his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
