Obituary

Janet Gesco of Fremont, formerly of Holton was reunited in Heaven with her beloved parents, Richard and Hazel and her companion of 20 years "Ms. Kitty" on October 1, 2023. We can only imagine what joy she experienced entering Heaven that beautiful morning. Mom was born on August 7, 1938 in Muskegon Heights. Her brother, Wayne who was a year older was over joyed with the prospect of a new baby sister. Through the years, they grew really close and at times could sense each other's presence from miles away. Even the morning that she passed, he knew something was going to happen that day. There were also times when mom was a typical sister. Always into something or getting him in trouble. Mom always called him "the Perfect One" and Wayne called her "his little princess". Mom graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1956 and started her family in 1960. She was blessed with 5 children and their needs came before hers. Being a single mom was rough, but she worked her hands to the bones to provide for us. Thinking of her children, she moved to Holton where her parents were living at the time and found a job at the local high school. For 30 years, she was considered a "Lunch Lady" to a lot of kids. She loved all the kinds who came through her serving line. She also worked at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for several years in the kitchen and bank. She always wanted to be with kids. Following retirement, she settled into being a grandma full time. Taking care of kids, picking them up from school, going to ball games and other grandma things. She watched all her children graduate from high school, watched her grandkids graduated and attending all the weddings and special events. Mom shared many memories with her cousins while growing up in Muskegon. She spent many weekends at "The Ovals" and then spending time with them at church. Mom had a strong faith and determination. She loved all the family Christmas' at the old farm house, a tradition that was started with her folks and continued for a many years. He home was always filled with love, laughter and food. She later moved to Fremont, taking her fur baby with her and lived for 9 years with her daughter, Joni and children. She was known to everybody as "Grandma G". Mom always had a smile; most of the time, a shoulder to cry on; and a look that would stop you in your tracks. We all got the look at one time or another. Mom's most faithful friend was her fur baby "Ms. Kitty". They spent 20 wonderful years together and Ms. Kitty will be with mom now and forever as well as the last afgan her mother made her will keep her warm in the casket. Time took a toll on her and dementia stole her memories, but it never took her faith. She told us several times, she wanted to go see Jesus and to get her white robe. Even going as far to go shopping for the material to make her own robe. Besides her own children, Mom had a passion to care for even more. She became a supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for over 20 years and her dream was some day to visit the hospital but she never got the opportunity. The best thing though, the children that she had helped and have now passed on, she is now meeting them face to face. How's that for a legacy. Janet is survived by her brother, Wayne (Nancy) Kitchen; 5 children, Gayle (Cynthia) McFarland; John (Betty) McFarland; Craig Alan (Tessa) McFarland; Janell (Larry) Paul; Joni (Michael) Cygeirt; 13 grandsons, 5 granddaughters; and at last count, 35 great grandchildren; 2 nieces and 3 nephews; several great nieces and nephews and her sister-in-law, Nancy Braafhart. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Hazel (Kessler) Kitchen; grandparents, Charles and Fannie and Freeman and Nellie Gertrude; and Ms. Kitty who passed in 2021. We wish to give a special thank you to Dick and Janice for visiting mom so often, you will never know how much that meant to her. Love loved you guys and for her best friends that always asked about her, Thank You. Another special thank you to Harbor Hospice Care Team for the care they gave to mom in her last months of her life and for the support given to Joni and Janell, to Brittiny, Nick, Kelli, Cindy, Amy and the whole team, Thank You.
