Janette Webster Dunham Deur passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 12, 2018 at her home. The angels came and carried her to her home in Heaven to meet "Jesus" who she loved so very much. Heaven became extra precious to us that day. Janette was born on September 26, 1929 to Ralph and Louise (Dustin) Webster in the upstairs of her grandma's small 2-story log house that was on the road to Big Bend Park. Her dad had a dog, and that dog came upstairs, shook her mom's hand, rolled his eyes at this newborn creature then left, never to be seen again.
Being born at the onset of the depression era, her life was not easy. As was typical of her generation, she walked 5 miles uphill both ways to school – but in her case it was true. She told the story about when she was just 5 years old, a wicked blizzard developed and she had to walk 5 miles home alone in waist-deep blowing snow.
Surviving elementary school, she graduated from White Cloud High School and worked on her hands and knees in the onion fields to earn money so she could attend secretarial school in Muskegon. She said at 88 years old, she could still feel the muck oozing from her knees. She also worked for the Newaygo County Health Department for several years, then as a receptionist for the doctors at what is now Pine Medical.
An avid sports fan, she seldom missed her brother's sporting events, and then travelled the Midwest watching her grandchildren.
While raising her four children: Dr. Connie Dunham Dykman (Keith) of Bronson, Michigan; Kathy Dunham Horvath (dec) (Frank) of Fremont; Ronald Dunham (Mary) of Fremont; Janna Dunham Moon of Fremont; she was one of those super Moms, stepping up whenever needed, then teaching sewing to the 4-H girls.
On February 15, 1980, she married Marv Deur. Together they built a remarkable business called "The Shack" where she lived, kept the books, cooked and baked until she physically couldn't make homemade food anymore. She developed arthritis in her hands and walking became difficult due to an arthritic left knee, but she never gave up greeting guests with her wide welcoming smile and cheerful spirit.
The Shack serves banana splits every night of the week and she stood beside her husband slicing bananas while he scooped ice cream.
She loved her work and her life, but her real joy was her children and her grandchildren : Jason Horvath (dec); Travis Dykman (Mary); Angela Horvath Raube (Eric); Justin Moon (Katie); Daniel Moon (Abi); Marcus Moon (Autum); Curtis Dunham (Amanda) and her great grandchildren : JP and Cameron Dykman; Sydney, Emmerson, Tatum, Bristol, Nathan, and Tucker Moon.
For several years she took her grandkids on trips and the parents could go if they wanted to. Their first trip was the SS Badger from Ludington to Milwaukee, on the wavy Lake Michigan day and they almost all got sick. So the next trip she flew them to Beaver Island where they were the talk of the town and had the most memorable of all the trips which included Toronto, Hawaii, and a fabulous fly-in- fishing trip to a lodge in Canada.
She also adored her stepson, Butch Deur (Sherri) and his children, Prudence Fisk and JD Deur and their children, Casidy, Brandon, Cody, Elizabeth and Lauren. Her sister, Norma Hoffman (Jerry) of Fremont; Marvin Webster (Joan) (dec); Orville Webster (dec) (Judy) (Melodee); and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Janette seldom met a person she didn't like, or who didn't like her. She was an exceptional woman who will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched.
