Jay H. Charles, age 95 of Muskegon, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at the Brookhaven Nursing Home in Muskegon. Jay was born on March 27, 1913 in Fremont to Lawrence and Rosa (Dornbush) Charles and graduate from Fremont High School. He met and later married Martha Marie Crawford on December 22, 1936 in Muskegon and Martha preceded him in death on October 24, 1999. Jay had been a machinist and inspector at the Teledyne Continental Motors Company in Muskegon for many years until his retirement in 1973. Jay loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, had been a coin collector, enjoyed antiques and refinishing furniture, enjoyed collecting rocks and attending auctions. Jay is survived by his children, Susan Charles of Muskegon; Barbara LaRue of Muskegon; Beverly (Dennis) David of Hesperia; Joyce (Daniel) Light of Muskegon; Orville Charles of Muskegon; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; 1 brother, Harold Charles of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha; his son, Nicholas Charles in 1968 while serving in the armed forces in during the Vietnam Conflict and by his brothers and sisters, Louis, Ray, Lawrence Jr., and Stanley; 5 sisters, Pauline, Luella, Ruth, Josephine, and Myrtle. . Funeral services were held on April 12, 2008 at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel with visitation 1 hour prior to the funeral with Pastor John Brown of the First Baptist Church of Muskegon presiding with interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont.
