Dr. Jess J. DeYoung, M.D., age 98 of Fremont, departed for his eternal home on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at the Green Acres Assisted Living Center in Fremont. Jess was born on March 21, 1925 to Henry and Helen (Heetderks) DeYoung in Bishop, Michigan, of which Fremont is now a suburb of. Jess graduated from Fremont High School in 1942. After 4 years of farming on his parents farm, he attended and graduated from Calvin College with a degree in pre-med. He attended the University of Michigan, graduating there with his Medical Degree in 1953. Jess married Alma DeHaas on June 23, 1951 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Fremont and remained a member until his passing.
Jess opened his first practice in Hesperia, Michigan before joining the United States Army where he served as a Flight Surgeon. After his honorable discharge, he returned to his hometown of Fremont and joined Dr. Brooker Masters medical practice and were later joined by Dr. Norman Pedelty where they doctored, delivered and cared for many patients over the next 35 years. Jess served the Fremont community as a beloved doctor but also as a Gideon, Elder at his church, school board member of the Fremont Christian School and Fremont Public School; board of Bethany Christian Services, board of directors of the Old State Bank, and served as camp doctor at Camp Henry. Jess was devoted to his unwavering faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ; to his family, friends and his calling to be a doctor. He was truly one of a kind. His family and the community will surely miss this kind, gentle wise, funny, humble, dedicated man.
Jess is survived by his children, Randy (Karen) DeYoung of Walker, Craig (Brenda) DeYoung of Kentwood, Michael (Suzanne) DeYoung of Coopersville, and Julie (Greg) Bootsma of Byron Center; grandchildren, Patricia Gressler, Jennifer (Ben) Prins, Denise (Kevin) Ford, Tony (Elena) DeYoung, Bryce (Kelsey) DeYoung, Hillary (Alex) Hansen, Danielle (Travis) Tennant, Marie (Baki) Sanogo, Matthew DeYoung, Jessica (Andy) Tiefenbach, Grace (Mike) Fennema, Ben Bootsma, and Meeka Bootsma; and many great-grandchildren. Jess was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Alma on January 25, 2017; his sisters, Vesta Bos, Vera Sheridan and his brother, Tharon DeYoung.

FUNERAL SERVICES : Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 11am at the First Christian Reformed Church. INTERMENT : Maple Grove Cemetery.
