Jim Featherstone, age 57, of Fremont, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2017, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Jim was born on July 1, 1959, in Fremont to Neil James and Karen Louise (Schubert) Featherstone Jr.. Jim graduated from Fremont High School in 1977, where he excelled in cross-country and was a member of Fremont's first State Champion Cross-country team. Jim then attended and in 1981graduated from Michigan State University. While at MSU, Jim was awarded varsity letters in cross-country, lacrosse, and track and field. After graduation, Jim returned to the Fremont area and married Anne S. Vermeulen on July 2, 1988. Jim's career included several years as a teacher in the Lansing school system, attendance at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City, duty as an engineer on the Great Lakes, and many years in the sales and engineering departments of ServiceMaster and Halogen. After his return to Fremont, Jim spent many years assisting with the Fremont High School crosscountry team and volunteered as the cook-in-residence for the annual cross-country summer training camp, as well as personally assisting individual team members. Jim also served for many years on the Fremont Public School Board, including time as the treasurer. Jim was a master woodworker and was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church. Jim is survived by his wife, Anne, of Fremont; his children, Jacob Curtis (Ashley) Featherstone, of Sneads Ferry, North Carolina; Bennett James Featherstone, of Fremont; his brothers, Bill (Terri), of Novi, Michigan; Don (Kathy) Featherstone of London, UK; Don "DB" Belveal, of Cotopaxi, Colorado; his in-laws, Bertram and Alice Vermeulen; his sister-in-law, Martha (Dick) Kallenbach; brother-in-law, Ed Vermeulen; niece and nephews, Sophia Featherstone, Danny Featherstone, Austin Featherstone, Alex Kallenbach, and Katie Kallenbach; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Neil and Karen Featherstone. Memorial Celebration of Life for Jim will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017, starting at 11:30 AM.
