Joan French, age 86 of Fremont, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Joan was born on February 1, 1935 in Muskegon Heights to Arlie and Bertha (Newburn) French. Joan graduated from Muskegon Heights High School and has been a longtime resident of the area. Joan had been a homemaker and loved to play Bingo, doing word search puzzles, growing flowers and plants in her home. Joan became a loving resident of the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in her later years where she made an impact on many residents and staff. In her younger years, Joan had played the accordion and keyboard and enjoyed polka dancing.
Joan is survived by her children, Gilbert "Sonny" (Cheryl) VanOver; Rick (Andrea) VanOver; Linda (Rich) Hardenburgh; Bonnie (Jim) Fischer; Art (Mary) Puls; Linda (Jerry) Vaughn; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Joan was preceded in death by her son, Robert VanOver; her siblings, Thelma Phelps on June 3, 2007; Arlene Hiar on November 16, 2008; Jay French on October 3, 2008; Arlington "Junior" French on May 7, 2009; and by her companion and special friend of 27 years, Alfred Spaulding on November 14, 2012
Following her wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date and interment of the cremated remains will take place at Bridgeton Township Cemetery next to her son.
