Obituary

Joan Stryker (Milne) Grubaugh of Mesa, Arizona, moved to heaven on December 28, 2021 at the age of 91. Joan was born on January 13, 1930 to Oscar Dean Stryker and Grace Viola Hartman in Fremont, Michigan. At the age of two, Joan's mother died and two years later Oscar married Genevieve Gannon who became the beloved mother who raised her. Joan's parents had a tremendous impact on Joan's passion to joyfully live life to the fullest. Joan attended Fremont Public Schools and graduated from high school at Milwaukee Downer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduation Joan attended Northwestern University in Chicago receiving a degree in Physical Education. She met Bob Milne and they were married in June of 1952. Two daughters and a son were born. Joan's teaching career spanned 31 years and all levels of education, elementary through college. Joan received her MA at Rockford College and was Assistant Professor of Physical Education. When, in 1972, Joan and Bob moved to Arizona, Joan taught in the Scottsdale Public Schools. Joan received her Doctorate from Arizona State University. Joan was active in the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and was a recipient of the AzAAPHERD award and the Julian Smith National Honor award. Joan is lovingly remembered by her family for her joyful spirit and the fun summer adventures she planned. Joan married Beryl Grubaugh in January of 1987 and retired from teaching in 1992. During retirement, Joan wrote the book, A Collector's Guide to the Gerber Baby . They moved to Florida where Joan became a realtor in Sun City Center and in 2005 received Century 21's Centurion producer award. In 2008, she returned to Arizona, most recently residing at The Springs of East Mesa. Joan is survived by her children Mary Geneveve Paetz (Steve) of Surprise, Arizona, Jane M.Ahlschwede (Ron) of Gurley, Nebraska, and Robert H. Milne, Jr. (Cindy) of Gilbert, Arizona, sixgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sister Marian Hart of Hopkins, MN, and many niecesand nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, former husbands Robert H. Milne,Sr. and Beryl Grubaugh, step-brothers John Gannon and William Gannon, and infant brother, DeanStryker. A Celebration of Life will be in Fremont, Michigan in June.
