Joel Henry Campbell, age 87 of Walkerville, formerly of Temperance, Michigan, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the Cherry Blossom Manor in Hart, Michigan. Joel was born on December 8, 1931 in Leaton, Michigan to James W. and Teresa (Marshall) Campbell and graduated from Sand Creek High School in 1950. Joel then enlisted in the United States Air Force in January 1951 and attended school to become a Control Tower Operator. He served at air bases in Texas and Wisconsin as well as 18 months in Cold Bay, Alaska – in the Aleutian Islands Chain, before receiving his honorable discharge as a Sergeant in 1954.
Following his military service, Joel returned to and worked at Hurd Lock Manufacturing in Adrian as a Journeyman – Tool and Die Maker while attending Adrian College. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Adrian College in 1962 and his Master's Degree from Sienna Heights College in 1974. Joel also received his State Board of Special Vocational Education Certificate in the State of Michigan in 1962 and Teachers Certificate from Michigan State Board of Education in 1967. In addition, he completed other post graduate studies at Bowling Green State and Michigan State University. Joel had a keen desire for higher education and thoroughly enjoyed his 25 year tenure as a Chemistry Teacher at Monroe High School prior to his retirement in 1986.
Joel married his high school sweetheart Nancy Hough on June 8, 1957 and moved from Adrian to Temperance in 1963 where they lived until their retirement in 1986 and then moved to their summer home on Campbell Lake in Walkerville. A home in which Joel and Nancy as well as their 3 boys built during many weekends and summer months starting in 1970. They spent their winters at their home in Zephyrhills, Florida. Joel was a sports enthusiast and participated in bowling and shuffling with his greatest love being golf where he succeeded in obtaining 2 hole-in-ones. He was also active in various service clubs and was talented in woodworking. Perhaps the greatest deed and the one that gave him the most pleasure was his charitable works and the top of this list was the White Christmas Program he initiated and later chaired at Monroe High School for several years benefiting some 60 needy families.
Joel is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy of Walkerville; his 3 sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren – Joel Scott Campbell who preceded him in death on October 31, 2007 and his children, Benjamin (Kristine) Campbell and daughters, Amri and Layla; Nicholas Clark (Veronica) Campbell and their daughter, Emelia. Robert Kent Campbell and his daughters, Jennifer Marie (Brian) Poling and son, Ronan and Jessica Mae Campbell. John Matthew Campbell and his sons, Joshua Henry (Mya) Campbell and their son, Aiden; and Clayton Matthew Campbell; his brother, John Campbell of Marshall, Texas; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Campbell of Toledo and Lottie Campbell of Jasper, Michigan; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. Joel was preceded in death by his son, Joel Scott Campbell and his brothers, Lyle, Martin, Thomas, George; his sisters, Mary Betz and Martha Campbell.
VISITATION : Thursday, June 27, 2019 from 5-7pm with ROSARY SERVICES at 7pm at the Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel 7193 W 48th Street Fremont MI 49412. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Friday, June 28, 2019 at 11am with a visitation from 10am – 11am at the St. Michael Catholic Church in Brunswick - 6382 S Maple Island Road Fremont MI 49412 with MILITARY HONORS at the church. INTERMENT : West Hesperia Cemetery. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS : friends may consider memorial contributions to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Treatment Center in Tampa, FL, or the American Heart Association or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
