John Henry DeVries, age 101 of Fremont, passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. John was born on Mary 13, 1916 in Friesland, Netherlands to Henry and Alice (Joppe) DeVries and later married Alfreda Louise. Louise preceded him in death. John became a Journeyman with an 8th grade education and worked as an electrician at Nelson Metal Products in Grandville for many years until his retirement. John later moved to the Fremont area where he enjoyed fishing and hunting. John was a veteran of World War II where he served in the United States Army in Panama refueling and repairing aircrafts until his honorable discharge as Sergeant in 1945.
John is survived by his niece, Jean (Charles) Kelmundt of White Cloud; Jim (Wendie) Jamieson of Kentwood; John (Elaine) Jamieson of Fremont; several great nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his wife, Louise and by his sister, Alice H. Jamieson in 2014.
Memorial services will be held in July at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility following cremation. Interment will be at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Grand Rapids next to his wife, Louise. Friends may consider memorial contributions to the Newaygo Medical Care Facility Patient Fund in memory of John.
