John H. Somers, age 83 of Fremont, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at the Newaygo County Compassion Home in Fremont. John was born on July 25, 1939 in Fremont to Leonard and Wallivena (Lummen) Somers and graduated from Fremont High School in 1957. John joined the United States Army after graduation and served in the 82nd Airborne Division until his honorable discharge. John married Judy Holmes on October 20, 1961 in Fremont and has been a lifelong resident of the area. John started painting while in high school for Somers Painting and eventually took over the business from his uncles, which John operated until 2001 when his son took over the business. John had a passion for music and this served as his ministry in the community for many years. John was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, living on the lake, and caring for his property. John has been a long time supporter of the Fremont Cross Country Team from 1980 to the present. He also enjoyed following his children's and grandchildren's sporting events throughout the years. John's greatest joy came from his family and he truly treasured the time he spent with them. John is survived by his wife, Judy; his children, Meridith (Patrick) Mulcahy; Cliff (Trisha) Somers; grandchildren, Dr. Helen Mulcahy, JP Mulcahy, Kelsey Somers, Conor Somers; Keegan (Breanna) Somers; Cooper Somers; great grandchildren, Lacey Somers and Beckham Somers; his brothers, Dr. Kenneth (Beth) Somers; Leonard (Carol) Somers; several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his son, John Leonard Somers on January 30, 2023.
