John Charles
Sergent
October 11, 1962 – April 24, 2026
John Charles Sergent, 63, of Holton, Michigan, passed away on April 24th, 2026 surrounded by love and the presence of his family.
John was born to John Raymond Sergent and Sandra Elaine (Walch) Sergent, who preceded him in death. He is reunited with his best friend and the love of his life, Karen (Hutt) Sergent and his cherished dog, Teddy.
He leaves behind his daughters: Abigail Sergent, Emily Sergent, Molly Sergent and Katie Sergent, who were the pride and joy of his life. He is also survived by: his siblings, Susan Egerton, Sally Tanner-Holloway, Jay (Jessica) Sergent, Petra Sergent and Simeon Sergent, along with many extended family members and friends who loved him deeply.
John proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy. After his service, he devoted nearly 30 years to his career as a real estate appraiser, where his honesty, diligence, and sharp eye for detail made him someone people trusted and respected.
More than any title or profession, John will be remembered for his incredible sense of humor and his gift for storytelling. He had a way of lighting up a room with his jokes and making people feel instantly at ease. His laughter was real, warm and contagious, and his presence left people better than he found them.
John found joy in the world around him. He loved music that filled a room or spontaneous road trips. He loved walking through the woods, where things felt quiet and steady, and sitting along Lake Michigan, watching the water meet the sky at sunset.
He was always working with his hands, whether it was yardwork, home projects, or finding something to fix or improve. He believed in taking care of things, making spaces better, and showing up in practical ways.
His kindness showed up everywhere, often without announcement. He would stop on the road to help turtles cross safely and bought food in bulk during the holidays to donate to food pantries. He gave freely, without hesitation, and never needed recognition for it. That was simply who he was.
Most of all, John loved deeply and fully. He cared for people in a way that made them feel seen, supported, and valued. His home, his laughter, and his presence were a place of comfort to those he loved. His family was his greatest pride, and his love for them shaped everything he did.
To know John was to know a man with a heart of gold - funny, kind, generous, and so deeply loved. His absence is felt profoundly by all who knew him, and his memory will be carried forward with love, gratitude, and lasting devotion.
Cremation will take place and a private celebration of his life will take place this summer.
