John Leonard Somers, age 57 of Fruitport, formerly of Fremont, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 30, 2023 at the Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids. John was born on October 26, 1965 in Fremont to John and Judy (Holmes) Somers. John graduated from Fremont High School in 1984 and was known as the "flying dutchman" in school for his excellence in running cross country and track. He later graduated from Michigan State University in 1989 where he received his teaching degree and taught in Houston, Texas before he returned back to West Michigan. Upon his return, John started work with his father and eventually took over the family painting business, Somers Painting, which he currently owned and operated, an outstanding painter throughout West Michigan. John married Carie Ciezak on December 12, 2012 in Grand Haven and has been a longtime resident of the Fruitport area. John and Carie enjoyed fishing together, he had been a true Michigan outdoorsman. He was a successful deer hunter with bow and rifle hunting for many consecutive years; enjoyed reading, cooking at home and was a craftsman at making and fixing almost anything. John is survived by his wife, Carie Somers, RN of Fruitport; his children, Keegan John (Breanna) Somers; Cooper Edison Somers; Haley Elizabeth Minzey; Jarrett Lee Minzey; his granddaughter, Lacey Somers and 1 grandson due at the end of February; his parents, John & Judy Somers; his mother & father-in-law, Linda & Al Ludlow; sister, Meridith (Patrick) Mulcahy; brother, Clifton (Trisha) Somers; nieces and nephews, Dr. Helen Mulcahy, JP Mulcahy, Kelsey Somers, Conor Somers.
