Obituary

Joseph F. Slater, age 94 of Holton, passed away Wednesday at the Gerber Memorial Health Services in Fremont following a short illness. Joe was born on June 5, 1915 in Holton to John and Mary (Schmitt) Slater and has been a lifelong resident of the area. Joe met and later married Grace Alma Saxton on Nov. 11, 1939 in Brunswick. Joe had worked at the Lorey Welding Company in Muskegon for several years and had been a dairy farmer in Holton all his life. Joe has been a lifelong member of the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Brunswick where he helped with the design and construction of the current church. Joe was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus and was the first Grand Knight of the Marian Council #3111. Joe had enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years, enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida and playing cards. He treasured time spent with his grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and enjoyed the daily visiting at his home with friends and family. SURVIVORS : his wife of 70 years, Grace of Holton; his children, Joseph (Mary) Slater of Holton; Janice (Thomas) Uganski of Newaygo; James (Bonnie) Slater of Holton; Joan (Richard) Kokx of Fremont; 15 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; brother, Ben Slater of Holton; sisters, Mary Monette of Brunswick; Helen (Frank) Sohasky of Muskegon; Martha (Harold) Saxton of Pontiac; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-laws, Marian Slater of Twin Lake; Delores Slater of Holton; Marge Slater of Muskegon. He was preceded in death by his sister, Monica Douville and by his brothers, Lawrence, John, Louis, Paul, Leo, and Charles. VISITATION : Sunday 2-4 & 6-8 at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. SCRIPTURE SERVICES : Sunday at 7:30pm at the funeral home. MASS OF RESSURRECTION : Monday at 11am at the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Brunswick. INTERMENT : St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : St. Michaels Catholic Church for the Joseph F. Slater Memorial Fund.
