Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we say goodbye to Joseph (Joe) Clinton Torrey, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, partner, and friend, who passed away unexpectedly on June 26, 2025.

Joe was the kind of man who made you feel like family the moment you met him. Known for his infectious laugh, big heart, unique sense of humor, and boundless energy, he left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Whether it was through his 35+ years in construction—where he built more than just structures, but also strong relationships—or out on the football field, coaching not only his three boys, but many other children, with patience, pride, and passion, Joe gave everything he had to the people and things he loved.

But where Joe shined the brightest was in his role as a father and grandfather. He was a rock for his family—steady, kind, compassionate, understanding, and always ready with a joke or a story that made everyone smile. He showed his love not just through words, but through action. Every call he answered, every game he showed up to.

His work ethic was unmatched. Whether it was building something in the blazing sun and heat, or in the freezing cold, or staying up late to help with homework or fix something around the house, Joe never shied away from hard work. But beyond the tough exterior was a deeply compassionate man—one who gave second chances, who listened without judgment, and who made you feel safe simply by being there!

He will be missed more than words can express—but his spirit lives on in every life he touched. In the laughter of his grandchildren, in the lessons he taught his kids, in the hands he helped build up over the years. His legacy is one of love, strength, and humility.

Joseph is survived by his children: Melissa (Jeff) Torrey, Nathan (Portia) Torrey, Ryan (Alyssa) Torrey, Brent (Katelyn) Torrey, Emily Naghtin, Alexis Torrey, his fiancé: Amber Burton; his siblings: Edward (Pamela) Torrey, Diana (Jan) Ralford, Max (Tifanee) Torrey, and Cheryl (Simon) Burdick, along with 14 grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his mother, Karen (Evans) Torrey, and his father, Max Torrey, Sr.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Holton American Legion on July 11th. Further details, such as the time of the event, will be posted ASAP in a Facebook event named "Celebrating the life of Joe Torrey."

Thank you for allowing us to become the people we are today, while sometimes letting us fall but gently guiding us along the way! You will be missed every single day! We love you, Dad!
