Joseph E. Vermilyea, age 66 of Holton, passed away Friday, March 6, 2009 at his home following a lingering illness. Joe was born on November 12, 1942 in Muskegon to Lester Paul and Maude May (Trowbridge) Vermilyea Sr. and graduated from Holton High School in 1961. Joe met and later married Jacqueline Lee Rasmussen on September 5, 1964 at the Holton United Methodist Church. Joe had worked for the Muskegon County Road Commission for 13 years and then became a self employed carpenter for the rest of his life. Joe shared his woodworking and wood carving trade with many in the community by making wood products including gun stocks and dog sleds. Joe most recently started wood model building and enjoyed making community of Holton in H.O. size. Joe was an avid outdoorsman where he had been a dog sledder and was a member of the American Mountain Men Association. Joe was also a veteran of the United States Navy. Joe is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jackie of Holton; his children Daniel (Michelle) Vermilyea of Muskegon, currently living and working in Kuwait; Shelli Raison of Longwood, Florida; his grandchildren, Ashleigh, Megan, and Dominick Vermilyea in Kuwait; Bethany, BreeAnna and Dylan in Longwood; his other kids, Duane Townsend, Diane Vermilyea, Luann Decker, Jineen Vermilyea, Lester Vermilyea; his sisters, Elaine (Charles) Kiogima of Muskegon; Louise Vermilyea of Holton; Patricia (Albert) Wiegand of Twin Lake. Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Lester Vermilyea Jr. VISITATION : Monday 2-4 & 6-8 at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. FUNERAL MEMORIAL SERVICES : Tuesday at 1pm at the Holton United Methodist Church. INTERMENT : Oakwood Cemetery in Holton. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS: Hospice of Michigan.
