Josephine A. Luchies, age 96 of Holland, formerly of Fremont, passed away Wednesday at the Freedom Village Inn in Holland. Josephine was born on Feb. 13, 1915 in Fremont to Albert and Jennie (VanHemert) Luchies. Josephine started working at the Old State Bank in Fremont in 1940, shortly after graduation from high school and after several years became the first President of the Old State Bank in Fremont. At the time, Josephine was the first woman to become a bank president in the State of Michigan. In 1983, Josephine retired from the presidents position but remained on the board and served as the Chairman of the Board until the mandatory retirement age of 72 set by the bank in 1986 and then became a director emeritus for several years. Josephine was a longtime member of the Second Christian Reformed Church and later a member of the Christ Memorial Church in Holland. Josephine had been a longtime Sunday School teacher, had served as President of the World Home Bible League; had been an active community volunteer in various organizations in Fremont; avid supporter of Appalachia Reach-out, enjoyed reading; traveling and spending time at Glenn Lake and treasured time spent with her nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Josephine is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Julia Smalligan and Alyda Klont. VISITATION : Friday, January 20, 2012 from 1-2pm at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Fremont. FUNERAL SERVICES : Friday, January 20, 2012 at 2pm at the church. INTERMENT : Maple Grove Cemetery. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : Fremont Area Community Foundation for the Fremont Christian School.
