Stephens, Josephine A. Josephine A. Grandma Jo Stephens age 75 of Fremont, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004 at the Gerber Memorial Health Services in Fremont. She was born on June 25, 1928 in Oceana County to Sumner and Dorothy (Hitts) Medbury and later married Charles Lester Stephens on June 21, 1947 in Fremont. Lester preceded her in death on August 14, 1973. Jo had worked at Howmet Corporation in various departments for 26 years until her retirement in 1992. She has been a lifelong resident of the Fremont area where she was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church. She was a 50 year member of the Fremont Laurels Post #6898 Auxiliary; volunteered in the H.A.G.S. at Gerber Memorial Health Services Gift Shop for many years, was a member of the Ladies of the Moose in Fremont; enjoyed the outdoors, knitting, sewing and crocheting and especially enjoyed her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Charles L. (Sandy) Stephens of Grand Haven; Charlene Anderson of Ferrysburg; Rick (Mary Beth) Stephens of Fremont; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; her niece, Cathy Jo (Tom) McCumber of Twin Lake; her sister, Verna Vanderboegh of Holton; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Laverne Medbury and Carl Medbury. Funeral memorial services were held on Monday, March 29, 2004 from the Fremont United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Wood and Rev. Bertram Vermeulen of the Fremont United Methodist Church presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery. Friends may consider the American Cancer Society or the Fremont United Methodist Church for memorial contributions.
