Joyce C. Maat, age 84 of Fremont, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Joyce was born on June 5, 1927 in Buchanan, Michigan to Ralph David and Helen (Nieboer) Wheat and moved to Grant at the age of 5. Joyce later married John Maat on January 24, 1948 in Fremont and together they operated a farm in Fremont for many years. John preceded her in death on January 1, 2002. Joyce had been a nurse at Gerber Hospital in Fremont for several years and stopped in 1950 to raise her family and later opened her own beauty salon at her home which she operated for several years. Joyce had been a member of Farm Bureau and had enjoyed ceramics. Joyce especially enjoyed being a mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Fremont. Joyce is survived by her children, Larry Maat of Lenior City, Tennessee; Randy (Donna) Maat of Fremont; Jeff (Dawn) Maat of Fremont; 7 grandchildren, Jamie, Heather, Shawn, Miranda, Zach, Taylor and Cody; her brother, Donald (Janet) Wheat of Grant; her lifelong friend, Emily Welsh of Fremont. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Jean Maat on November 2, 2001; by her granddaughter, Katie Maat; by her sister, Marjorie and her brother, Karl. VISITATION : Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 from 5-8pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. FUNERAL SERVICES : Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 11am at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel.
