Kenneth Ralph Dare Sr., age 84 of Fremont, passed away Monday, July 16, 2018 at his home. Kenneth was born on April 6, 1934 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to William and LaVerne (Titus) Dare. Ken grew up in Wilkes-Barre and at the age of 14 left home and started working at a gas station where he slept on a cot at the station.
As soon as he was able, Ken joined the United States Army where he served during the Korean War in North Korea in the YonChong Valley driving a tank, delivery supplies to the various troops, giving comfort to dying comrades and brought back many wounded and deceased veterans. During his military service, Ken was in a tank that was hit with a mortar and was seriously injured. He was flown back to the United States to Letterman Hospital where he woke up and found he could not walk. He was 19 years old and a determined Irishman and after much rehab he worked his way to crutches and learned to walk again.
After his discharge, Ken returned to Pennsylvania and due to no work decided to head to California but stopped off in Michigan to visit his parents who had moved there. While in Michigan he got a job working for United Parcel Service delivery packages and eventually retired, due to an injury, as a semi driver after 32 years of service to UPS.
During his working years, Ken worked various jobs including - brick maker; Courtdale Police Department – with their small one cell jail that had no key; laying floors; electrical work and even worked for an undertaker for a period of time.
Ken spent 35 years living in Newaygo County where he volunteered with the Newaygo County Sherriff's Department, the Newaygo County Fair, was a life member of the DAV – Disabled American Veterans and VFW Post 6898 in Fremont. Ken enjoyed helping people and meeting new people.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Anita I. (McIntire) Dare; his son, Kenneth R. Dare Jr. of Tennessee; his daughter, LaVerne Dare; 5 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren with all but 3 living in Michigan.
Ken wanted to thank all the people that he has met along his journey of life and his friends for the pleasure of knowing them.

FUNERAL SERVICES : Monday, July 23, 2018 at 11:00am at the Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel with MILITARY HONORS at the Maple Grove Cemetery. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : VFW 6898 in Fremont.
