Obituary

LaVern William Brandt, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community servant, passed away on October 20, 2025. Born on December 23, 1930, LaVern lived a life marked by dedication, humor, and unwavering faith.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jean Mildred (Bement) Brandt, whom he married on February 24, 1951, in Grandville, MI. Together, they built a life rooted in love and raised three quality sons. He was also preceded by his parents Otto and Elizabeth (Geysbeek) Brandt, and his sister Elizabeth (Russell) Vugteveen.

LaVern had a long and distinguished career at General Motors, where he served as Head of Service Maintenance. Known for his sharp wit, he often joked that the plant closed when he retired because they couldn't run it without him.

In 1972, LaVern moved his family permanently to Diamond Lake, where he enjoyed countless hours boating and water skiing with friends—being among the first to ski with his close friend, Larry Welch. His love for the lake and community was evident in his daily golf cart rides and Sabbath afternoon visits with his sons.

LaVern and Jean were instrumental in funding and building the Fremont Seventh-day Adventist Church, leaving a lasting legacy of faith and service. He remained a dedicated member of the church throughout his life.

A proud Lions Club member for 51 years, LaVern was passionate about helping underprivileged children gain access to corrective lenses and hearing aids. He was a familiar face at the monthly Lions Club Fish Fry in White Cloud, always serving with a smile and a heart full of compassion.

LaVern is survived by his sons James LaVern Brandt (Janice), Dennis Lee Brandt (Debbie), and Scott Allen Brandt (Angel); as well as his cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was deeply committed to spending quality time with his family, always making room for meals and meaningful conversations.

LaVern's life was a testament to hard work, faith, and love. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the community he helped build. The words of wisdom he shared were that Jesus was coming soon and that Jesus loved them. He would also extend the advice: if you can't be good, then be careful.

The visitation will be on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Seventh Day Adventist Church in Fremont from 11:00 A.M. to Noon. The funeral service will follow from Noon to approximately 1:00 P.M. After the service, there will be a luncheon.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lions Club in White Cloud or the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Fremont. LaVern was very passionate about their purpose and mission.
