Obituary

Lee Charles "Chuck" Paris passed away suddenly on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at his home in Fremont, Michigan. He was the oldest of four boys, born on September 24, 1958 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He spent most of his childhood in Fremont where he played catcher on the varsity baseball team and at one time held the game and single season putout records. Chuck graduated from Fremont High School (1977) and received his bachelor's in accounting from Michigan State University. After college, he moved to Pasadena, California to start his career. It was there that he met Dorothy, and they married in 1986. They moved back to Fremont shortly after their daughter Katie was born. Chuck worked for many years at LubeCon in White Cloud with his brother Andy, and later at Oosting and Burt with his friends Scott and Steve. When he wasn't out roadtripping, he spent his time at his home on Fremont Lake where he raised three daughters with Dorothy. Chuck was a collector. Starting at a young age, he collected baseball cards--a hobby that followed him into adulthood. In the last decade or so he focused more on another passion: Civil War history. He not only collected hundreds of books on the subject, but amazingly read most of them too. All of these treasures he kept in "Dad's Baseball Card Room and Civil War Library," along with many trinkets that reminded him of his daughters. Chuck loved his daughters more than anything, and made it abundantly clear how proud of them he was. He sported garb from all their colleges, even for his U of M kids. Later, it was their corporate swag that he wore proudly. While Chuck's daughters didn't always share his interests in baseball or history, they bonded over a mutual love of music. Even as they dispersed throughout Michigan, Chuck was successful at getting everyone back together for family concerts. Over the past year, Chuck found so much joy in his grandson Henry. He loved watching his growth from afar with photos and videos, but was also able to spend many weeks of uninterrupted time visiting him in California. Chuck loved to meet new people. He wasn't always comfortable in a crowd, but he had this gift where he could walk up to a stranger and easily strike up a friendly conversation. He was always a buddy to park rangers and docents at battlefields. He also made friends online with people who shared his interests, sometimes visiting them while on roadtrips or planning their own adventures together. Perhaps his most enduring friendships were with his fellow co-founders of the ODBL fantasy baseball league, many of whom he had known since middle school: Andy "Harlow" Paris, John "Tilly" Tillman, Duane "Duane" Mater, John "Krimmer" Krim, Jeff "Weedhopper" Weiden, John "Farview" Farwig, and his late friend Greg "Meeus" Meeusen. Chuck served as the commissioner for years, and for a long while he held the most wins in league history (succeeded by his little brother Andy). One of his favorite pastimes was calling up Andy and bugging him about the trades they should make. He stayed in touch with all his brothers by "tweeting" (texting) them often, and kept photos of his mom, dad, and brother Jamie next to his reading chair. Chuck is survived by his wife Dorothy; his children, Katie (Cory) Kohn, Lizzie Paris (Dave Bernthal), and Sarah Paris; his grandchild Henry Kohn; his father Lee Paris; brothers, Andy (Beth) Paris, and Joe (Judy) Paris; sisters-in-law DeeDee Paris, Elizabeth DeClue, Jackie (Bob) Fields, and Jeanne (Bernd) Steinnebrunner; and brothers-in-law, John (Vilma) DeClue, Tony (Laurie) DeClue, and Chris (Jean) DeClue. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews and dear friends. Chuck was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie (Johnson) Paris; brother Tim "Jamie" Paris; and father- and mother-in-law, Ray and Lornahope DeClue.
