Leland L. Lee Chapin, age 86 of Brohman, passed away Saturday, August 04, 2012 at the Grand Oakes Nursing Center in Baldwin following a short illness. Lee was born on June 9, 1926 in Goodheart, Michigan to Lyle and Margaret (Johnston) Chapin and later married Lois Berndt (Fowler) on May 25, 1984 in White Cloud. Lee moved to the White Cloud area in 1954 from Grand Rapids and had owned and operated Southland Party Store for many years until his retirement. Lee enjoyed tinkering in his garage, but his love was for camping and fishing in the Upper Peninsula at Trout Lake. Lee enjoyed fishing for walleye and visiting with his friends, Roger and Debra Newland at Trout Lake. Lee served in the United States Army during World War II and also during the Korean War and was a life member of the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsmans Post #4249. Lee is survived by his wife of 28 years, Lois of Brohman; 6 children, Alice (Ivan) Carson of Hesperia; Linda (Bill) Holmes of Fremont; Carol (Dale) Cruzan of White Cloud; Margie Smith of New Hudson, Michigan; Lori (Mike) Stencel of Tennessee; Ronald (Wendy) Fowler of White Cloud; 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; his sister, Mabel Kughman (Gilbert Young) of Harbor Springs, Michigan; many nieces and nephews; 3 sister-in-laws of Muskegon; 1 brother-in-law of Muskegon. Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 17, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Newaygo V.F.W. Memorial Hall in Newaygo following cremation with Pastor Doug Bennett, Chaplain - Heartland Hospice and the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsman's Post #4249 Honor Guard presiding. Friends may consider memorial contributions to the Newaygo V.F.W. Honor Guard or Heartland Hospice for memorial contributions in memory of Lee.
