Obituary

Leon W. McGowen, age 92 of White Cloud, passed away peacefully following a short illness on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Leon was born on August 16, 1929 in Fremont to Patrick and Clarissa (Miller) McGowen. Leon graduated from Fremont High School in 1947 and has been inducted into the Fremont Hall of Fame for sports. Leon continued his education at Michigan State University where he received his degree in accounting and ran on the track team while at Michigan State. Following college, Leon joined the United States Air Force where he served during the Korean War until his honorable discharge and returned back to the Fremont and White Cloud area. Leon met and later married Donna Hooker on August 15, 1959 in Fremont and Donna preceded him in death on April 6, 2021 following 62 years of marriage. Leon has been a longtime resident of the White Cloud area where he had been an accountant at O.J. Briggs Lumber Company and later owned and operated McGowen Tax Service for many years. He was active in the community where he had served on the White Cloud City Council and had also served as Mayor for a combined service of 20 years. Leon enjoyed coaching rocket football, attending his children and grandchildren's school and sporting activities, attended the Faith Bible Church in White Cloud and enjoyed singing the Irish Songs he learned from his father. Leon especially treasured the time he spent with his family at gatherings. Leon is survived by his children, Mark (Cameo) McGowen of White Cloud; Gail (Wally) Hitts of New Port Richie, Florida; Bob (Pam) McGowen of White Cloud; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 9 step great grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Chuck (Nannette) Hooker of White Cloud; many nieces and nephews. Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; his brother, Ronald I. McGowen; sister, Ila M. Hansen. Family graveside services will be held in May at the Lincoln Township Cemetery in White Cloud following cremation with military honors under the auspices of the United States Air Force.
