Leona "Lee" May Johnson, age 93 of Fremont, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at her home following a slow decline in her health. Lee was born on May 12, 1927 in Muskegon to Leonard and Wilhemina "Minnie" (Visscher) Tanis and moved to the Fremont area at an early age where she graduated from Fremont High School in 1945. Lee later met and married Jim Johnson on July 1, 1949 in Fremont. Jim preceded her in death on May 3, 2015. Lee had worked at Gerber Products Company and Dri Slide prior to starting the VAY Manufacturing Company in Fremont on October 1, 1978 and continued until their retirement and closing on September 30, 2009. Lee has been a longtime member of the Fremont Christian Church where he had been active member where she had served as a Deaconess, had been active in the church bazaar, sang in the choir, and was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship. Lee also enjoyed roller skating in her younger years, golfing, bowling and enjoyed her flower beds and singing with the Reeman Girls Church Group. Lee is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Jeff) Smith of Fremont; Sandy (Mark) Pearce of Fremont; her grandchildren and great grandchildren – granddaughter, Melissa (Brad) Hoekert and their children, Hannah Rain, Nora Leland, Dawson James; granddaughter, Jennifer Jo (Mike) Burkart and their children, Thatcher Augustus, Wyatt Sebastian, Arlo Francis; grandson, Justin (Katie) Smith; granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn (David) Clouse and their children, Quinn Kiana, Alexander Jeffrey; granddaughter, Nicole Lynn Pearce; grandson, Daniel Peter Pearce; her brother, Wilbur (Glenda) Tanis of Newaygo; several nieces and nephews. Lee was preceded in death by her husband James; her parents, Leonard and Minnie Tanis and her sister, Virginia Purcell.
