Lois Beverly (Riker) Sanderson was born on February 25, 1932, in Jackson, Michigan, to John Hewitt Riker and Genevieve (Litchult) Riker. She passed away at the Newaygo Medical Facility on August 31, 2018.
Lois married Jack Clinton Sanderson in Jackson, Michigan in 1953. They provided an active environment to raise their six children at their farm in Fremont. A talented homemaker, she would undertake creative projects learned through the Newaygo County Extension Club. Lois enjoyed dancing, teaching 4-H, knitting, toll painting, and as an active member of the Fremont Garden Club, tending to her beautiful flower gardens, She played a major role in raising vegetables and animals on the Sanderson farm and enjoyed meeting friends who would stop at the roadside stand off 80th Street or visit at the county or state fair. When Lois's husband, Jack, retired from teaching Agriculture and started Standardbred harness racing, she played a supporting role in the care and preparation of the race horses, often traveling hundreds of miles to the next race.
Jack and Lois were members of the Fremont Methodist Church and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. They enjoyed walking in the woods behind their farm and hosting parties at the cabin along Brooks Creek. Frequent travelers, they loved to take the train, fly, or drive their camper to visit scenic and historic places, friends and family all over the US and the world. They hosted exchange students Hugo Tilly from Chile, Birgit Sobel from Germany, and Claes Uvesten from Sweden.
Lois is survived by her children, Tanya Sanderson (Cliff Clark) of Newaygo, MI., Jackie Sanderson (Michael Cole) of Sedalia, CO., Kurt (Susan) Sanderson of Fremont, MI., Kay (Alan) Rottman of Hudsonville, MI., John (Amanda) Sanderson of Walker, MI., and Kristin Watson of Bergheim, TX. Lois has been blessed with nine grandchildren, Derek (Taylor) Rottman, Brent (Ashley) Rottman, Jared Rottman, Bryce Sanderson, Carson Sanderson, Luke Sanderson, Hallie Sanderson (Michael Strobel), Kirsten (Austin) Sanderson; and Ryan (Cris) Loughridge; two great-granddaughters, Madelyn Sanderson and Grey Bird Loughridge; and two great grandsons; Foster Rottman and Judah Rottman. Lois leaves one surviving sister, Norma Ball of Sarasota, Florida, and one sister-in-law, Lola Thomas of Wayland, MI. Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Jack Sanderson; brother, Richard Riker; and sister, Cathlyn Barker.
