Brooks , Mabel J. Mabel J. Brooks, age 90 of Fremont , passed away Thursday, December 18, 2003 at the Transitional Health Services. She was born on January 31, 1913 in Shelby , Michigan to Thomas and Edna (Brady) Barritt and married Fred Brooks on October 8, 1937 in Evart , Michigan . She graduated from Shelby High School , Olivet College , received her Masters degree from Central Michigan University and completed graduate work at Western Michigan University . She has been a lifelong resident of the area where she had been a math teacher at the Mona Shores Public Schools and had been a longtime church musician and piano teacher in Fremont for many years. She received the Fremont Rotary Service Above Self Award in 2001 and was a member of the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Fremont . She is survived by her son, Jackson Brooks of Fremont; her sisters, Eleanor Dykstra of Rothbury; Ethel Wagner of Hart; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Joyce Carpenter and Barbara White. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred on July 3, 2002 and her daughter, Elaine Brooks on July 24, 2003 . Funeral services were held on Monday, December 22, 2003 from the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Fremont with Chaplain Judy Corey of the Newaygo County Chaplaincy Services and Rev. Raymond Dekker of the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont.
