Madeline E. Nelsen, age 70, of Fremont, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2001 at her home. She was born on August 30, 1931 in Eckford, Michigan to Chester and Pauline (VanderPolder) McCreary and married Eugene Ray Hathaway on June 26, 1948 in Fremont and Eugene preceded her in death on April 29, 1969. She later married James I. Nelsen on February 8, 1981 in Fremont and James preceded her in death on December 26, 1987. She had been employed at Ashcroft Grocery until her retirement in 2000. She is survived by her daughter Bonnie Jean (Gail) Vansickle of Newaygo; sons, Steven Ray (Barbara) Hathaway of Grant; Rodney Lynn Hathaway also of Grant; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor (Guy) Coe of Kernersville, North Carolina and Thelma (Allen) Dummer of Warren, Michigan. Funeral services were held on Friday, October 26, 2001 from the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel with Rev. Mary J. Frens presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
