IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marie
King
June 6, 1924 – June 25, 2013
Marie Henrietta King, age 89 of Fremont, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility in Hart following a stroke and short illness. Marie was born on June 6, 1924 in Hart, Michigan and later married Ralph V. King on August 29, 1942 in Hart. Ralph preceded her in death on February 7, 1999. Marie came from a large family with eight brothers and sisters. Following the death of her mother, Marie Schramm, in 1929, her father, Frank, married her mothers widowed sister, Rose Morat, in 1931, instantly converting her eight cousins into step-brothers and step-sisters. It was a full house on the family farm. After high school and marriage, Marie attended county normal and taught school for a year, and then worked in her fathers bakery in Hart, while Ralph served in the Navy during WWII. In 1948, they moved to Fremont and bought the Fremont Bakery, living in the basement for the first year so they could pay off the loan. In 1964, they bought the tavern across Main Street from the bakery with friends Chuck and Marge Burns. They sold the bakery in 1968 to Ralphs brother-in-law, Charles Hopkins, and eventually bought out and operated Chuck and Ralphs Tavern until they sold it in 1978. Marie led an active life, golfing and bowling on leagues, and hunting squirrels and deer into her 70s. In later years, she transitioned to bingo and cards, reading, and watching sports. She enjoyed her family and friends, had a ready smile and laugh, lived independently until the last few weeks, and was content with her life. Marie is survived by sons, Randy (Sally) of Eatonville, Washington, and Terry of Greenville; six grandchildren Mackenzie, Dylan, Skylar, Jackson, Casey and Mike; and an extended family of nieces and nephews. Her favorite son, family friend, Larry Pekel, helped her weekly for the last several years and made it possible for her to stay homeand for this and more we thank him. Memorial services will be held on Monday, July 22, 2013 at 11am at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel with a visitation from 10-11am at the funeral home with a memorial luncheon following at the Fremont Moose Lodge.
