Obituary

Marvin L. Allen, age 85 of Newaygo, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012 at his home following a lingering illness. Marvin was born on August 18, 1926 in Adrian, Michigan to LaVerne and Minnie (Konynyk) Allen and later married Eva Rood on November 29, 1947 in Grand Rapids. Eva preceded him in death on September 18, 2002. Marvin retired as a quality control inspector, after working in various departments, at Fischer Body-General Motors Company in February 1, 1986 after 25 years. Marvin served in the United States Navy during World War II and also served during the Post Korean era as a Electricians Mate 3rd Class where he received the American Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Area ribbon with 5 stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 stars, and the World War II Victory Medal. Marvin was a life member of the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsmans Post #4249, was an avid hunter and fisherman, had enjoyed spending time in the Northeastern part of Newaygo County in his younger years with family reunions at the old family homestead. Marv also enjoyed playing cards and traveling to Las Vegas and Reno. Marvin is survived by his children, Glenn (Charlene) Allen of Bitely; Randall Allen of White Cloud; Marvanna Clark of Newaygo; 6 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; his sister, Lillian Holthof; half sisters, Mildred Scholten and Bonnie Hodges and half brother, Edward Luce. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva; his son-in-law, James Clark and his half brother, Harry Luce. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportmans Post #4249 Memorial Hall where military honors and a time of sharing will be held. Interment will take place later following cremation at the Whipple Cemetery in Northeastern Newaygo County. Friends may consider memorial contributions to Hospice of Michigan, Newaygo County in memory of Marvin.
