Marvin L. Boerma, age 80 of Bitely, formerly of Spring Lake and Fremont, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at his home. Marv was born on January 29, 1938 in Spring Lake to Walter and Ella (Schmidt) Boerma. Marv joined the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War. After his discharge, Marv returned to Michigan and graduated from Alma College with a Master's Degree in Biology. Marv began teaching at Grand Rapids West Catholic and later taught at Fruitport Public Schools for 25 years and had also been a football coach for 18 years until his retirement. After retirement, Marv moved to his 80 acres in Bitely where he enjoyed watching the wild orchids grow, trout fishing and improving the trout habitat on his small trout stream and deer hunting. Marv married Cathy "Rinda" Grimes on December 23, 1985 in Grand Haven and Cathy preceded him in death on October 13, 2001. Marv was a member of the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baldwin.
Marv is survived by his brother, Kenneth (Barbara) Boerma of Spring Lake; step sons, Greg (Theresa) Wilson of Norton Shores; Ron (Diane) Wilson of Grand Haven; a niece and 2 nephews; 9 great nieces and nephews and 9 great great nieces and nephews. Marv is also survived by his "fury friend – Lulu" who allowed him to rescue her from a local animal shelter and provided many months of companionship to Marv. Marv was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ella Boerma and his wife Cathy.
