Mary Ellen (Midge) Slater, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed peacefully on Friday, January 2nd, 2026, at her home in Holton, MI. She was born on Monday, September 11th, 1944, in Fremont, Michigan, to George and Buddy Manciu. Mary was 81 years old.
Mary lived a life full of dedication both to her family and her community. For many years, she was the proud owner and operator of Daniels Beauty Salon in Fremont and later M & J Greenhouse in Holton, where she fostered long-lasting relationships with customers who became friends. Among her incredible work ethic, she had a deep love for all things traveling. She did extensive travel through the country including visiting Alaska and Hawaii.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 39 years, Joseph John Slater, who stood by her side through life's joys and challenges. Mary was a loving mother to Kyle (Tammy) Grove of Fremont, and Chad (Kristine) Grove of Twin Lake. She cherished her role as a stepmother to Judith (David) Sova of Holton, Joseph Slater of Holton, and Janell (Roger) Deur of Fremont. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren; Karl Jordan, Melanie (Jake) Burt, Bree Grove, Amber (Josh) Brown, Kenneth (Danielle) Deur, Miranda (Dillon) Arends, Derek (Carrie) Sova, and her 8 great-grandchildren. Mary is also survived by her brother, Jack (Sue) Manciu of Ionia. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, George and Buddy Manciu, her brother George Manciu, and her sister Joan Hysell.
Mary's life will be celebrated with a series of services. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 8th, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Crandell Funeral Home - Fremont Chapel immediately followed by a Rosary at 7:00 pm. On Friday, January 9th, 2026, there will be a visitation at St. Michael Catholic Church, Brunswick, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. A luncheon to honor Mary's life will take place at the American Legion Post 397 in Holton, MI at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Michaels Renovation Fund, reflecting Mary's dedication to her faith and community. Arrangements have been provided by Crandell Funeral Home - Fremont.
