Mary W. Smith, age 94 of Newaygo, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Mary was born on July 7, 1917 in Detroit to Lyle and Sarah (Conners) Edwards and moved to the Newaygo area at an early age. Mary graduated from Newaygo High School in 1935 and later married Lamont W. Smith on February 10, 1945 in Newaygo and he preceded her in death in 1980. Mary had been a dental hygienist for Dr. Pearson and later worked at the Ben Franklin in Newaygo for several years. Mary was one of the eldest members of the Newaygo United Methodist Church where she enjoyed volunteering and had a great love of helping others. Mary had also been a member of the Ferry United Methodist and Hesperia United Methodist Church. Mary was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star and had volunteered at Love Inc. and also helped with Kids Hope. After their retirement, Mary and Lamont truly enjoyed spending their winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Mary is survived by her son, John L. (Dolly) Smith of Newaygo; her grandchildren, Carmon (Jeff) Kolenbrander; Bradley (Amber) Smith; her great grandson, Braxton Smith; her niece, Bonnie (Stan) Thomas of Newaygo; great nieces, Jacki (Eric) Nickel; Jodi (John) Bull; Keri (Neil) Geers; Erica (Brian) Boyd; and several great great nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Judith Ann Smith in 1946; her daughter, Judith Kae Smith in 2005; her brother, William Edwards and brother and sister-in-law, Jack & Ruby Edwards. VISITATION : Friday, May 4, 2012 from 1:30pm 3pm at the Newaygo United Methodist Church. FUNERAL SERVICES : Friday, May 4, 2012 at 3pm at the Newaygo United Methodist Church.
