Mary Suzanne Van Dam, age 79 of Newaygo, passed away following a short illness on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at her home. Mary was born on November 19, 1943 in Grand Rapids to Lee and Mildred (Sundquist) Goodrich and graduated from Wyoming Public Schools in Wyoming, Michigan. Mary met and later married John L. Van Dam on March 23, 1960 in Grand Rapids and John preceded her in death on May 2, 2019. Mary moved to the Newaygo area from Wyoming, Michigan in 1974 and had been a para pro at the Vera Wilsie Elementary School in Newaygo for 21 years until her retirement in 2015. Mary enjoyed reading, crocheting, following Michigan State University Football and Basketball and was a Detroit Tigers and Lions fan. Mary especially treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and she truly loved following their sports and school activities throughout the years. Mary is survived by her children, Leigh Ann (Rich) Griswold of Newaygo; Tracy (Ken) Kiper of White Cloud; Jon Van Dam of Newaygo; 12 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; several bonus children and grandchildren; her brother, Kenneth and Marj Goodrich; several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Van Dam on May 2, 2019 and her brother, Jim Goodrich.
