Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Brigman Vanderhyde, age 69 of Newaygo, Michigan and Oldsmar, Florida, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at the Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids following a long battle with heart disease. Mary was born on May 9, 1945 in Stanton, Virginia to Vincent Eugene and Pauline (Parker) Brigman. Mary met and later married Ken Vanderhyde on June 15, 1985 in Ellicott City, Maryland and moved to the Newaygo area in 1985. Mary joined the Womens Army Corp at the age 18 where she was a dietician and later attended the University of Maryland where she graduated with a degree in Special Education. She later returned to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore where she received her Masters Degree in Educational Counseling. When Mary moved to the Newaygo area, she started work at Newaygo County Mental Health and then taught at the Fremont Public Middle School and later became a counselor at Grant Public Schools. Mary was a member of the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo where she started the Womens Sewing Group and was also a member of the Espiritu Santo Catholic Church in Oldsmar, Florida where she was active in the sewing group as well. Mary was an avid golfer and was a member of the Ramshorn Country Club, Great Lakes Seniors Golf Association and member of the East Lake Woodlands Country Club in Oldsmar, Florida. Mary had been a stalwart member of the WGA for many years and was very active in the WGA activities. She had served as an officer, and was the co-chair of a key committee for the Drive for a Cure. Mary worked very hard with her committee members to put together auction baskets that were so instrumental in increasing the charitable donations. It was always prudent to have Mary on your committee because she frequently brought treats to help the creative process. Mary was a volunteer with the Suncoast Hospice of Florida. Marys other passions were sewing, embroidery, card making, quilting and her grandchildren. Mary also was an excellent baker of goodies for all her friends and retired pilots group. Mary was also known for enjoying the game Maj Jong. Mary will be remembered for her large caring and loving heart for everyone and was always ready to help anyone at any time. She will be dearly missed by all her knew her. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Ken of Newaygo and Oldsmar, Florida; her children, Michaelangelo (Dana) Spinola of Atlanta, Georgia; Joseph Spinola of Atlanta, Georgia; Katherine Bailey of Winter Park, Florida; Douglas S. (Dawn) Vanderhyde of Flint; 7 grandchildren; her sisters, Karen (Bobby) Guin of Virginia; Betty (John) Dickhute of Virginia; Barbara Lawrence of West Virginia; several nieces and nephews.
